In a world ruled by ancient entities, influenced by intention, and caught in a delicate balance between the physical and metaphysical, nothing comes without a cost, and no transformation can be stopped, once catalyzed. With Marie's spear, the only object known to permanently kill spirits destroyed, it seems as if nothing could truly threaten New Orleans and its otherworldly denizens again. However, the opposite proves to be true.

Desperate to reverse the damage done by the destruction of the spear, Teche, Florence Hawkins, Todd Finley, and Holata seek answers that could save the city from menacing primordial creatures, once thought to be banished from the human world. Creatures like the rougarou, haints, and the cauchemar emerge from the mystique of South Louisiana folklore to haunt the streets of New Orleans. Of course, a few bygone folktales shouldn't stand a chance against river gods, a relentless witch, and a very, very determined Midwestern runaway...right?
